Grassroots athletics coach, Johnny Igboka said suspended world women 400m champion, Salwa Eid Naser has always had the natural ability to run faster, and she should be able to convince the World Athletics integrity unit why she missed out of competition dope tests. Eid Naser who was discovered by coach Igboka in 2012 reasoned that there wasn’t any need for the young athlete to rely on dope to boost her chances. However, he said there could be an explanation by the Onitsha-born Eid Naser why she missed the tests. The other athlete is Christian Coleman of the USA who won the men’s 100m. “I have no reason to doubt Eid Naser’s ability. She is a natural-born runner and she is capable of achieving the 48.14 seconds she did in Doha without resorting to banned substances. When she was small she had this knack of not allowing any athlete who had beaten her previously to beat her twice. “I strongly believe that was the case when she beat Shaunae Miller-Uibo in the 400m final. Miller-Uibo had beaten her in the Diamond League and Eid Naser wouldn’t want to be beaten a second time; that is just her mentality. “I’m backing her to overcome the setback and compete at next year’s Tokoyo 2020 Olympics,” Igboka added. By Olasunkanmi Akoni Lagos State Government has postponed entrance exams into secondary schools indefinitely. Lagos, through its State Examinations Board, LSEB, postponed, indefinitely, 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, into its Junior Secondary Schools in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The examination was earlier scheduled for June 16 to 23, 2020. Director, LSEB, Mr. Supo Gbadegesin, who announced this on Monday, explained that the directive affected both public and private schools. In a related vein, a political activist/social critic, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, has called for sober reflection and rebirth by political players, leaders and appointees across the country. Onitiri, who spoke yesterday in Lagos, expressed sadness that the politicians had forgotten so soon the sacrifice and message of June 12, which the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola struggled and died for, adding that currently, there is no democratic government in Nigeria. Also, a human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, said immortalising Abiola was not enough, saying that the last 21 years in the nation’s return to democratic rule have been full of sorrow and tears. Falana, who spoke during a live radio programme in Ibadan, urged true patriots in the country to intensify the struggle for genuine democracy. He said: “One of the policies carried out by the Buhari administration is the recognition of June as a public holiday and replacement of Democracy Day which was originally May 29. Those who set May 29 as a Democracy Day did so out of spite. “For eight years, Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration refused to recognise the supreme sacrifice paid by Abiola in the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. It was very good on the part of this administration to have recognised that day. “But it is not enough to immortalise MKO. It is not enough to recognise June 12 as a Democracy Day. The last 21 years have been civil rule of disenchantment and frustration on the part of the majority of Nigerians.
