Katsina Protest: CSO condemns arrest of Sharif, demands immediate release ON JUNE 18, 20208:19 AMIN NEWS Kindly Share This Story:FacebookTwitterEmailWhatsAppPinterestShare Tasks Buhari on weeding out bandits, others By Gabriel Ewepu – Abuja A Civil Society Organisation, CSO, Concerned Nigerians, CN, Wednesday, condemned the arrest of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Nastura Sharif over Katsina protest by the Nigeria Police Force and demanded his immediate release. The condemnation and demand were made in a statement signed by the Convener, CN, Comrade Deji Adeyanju, where the group accused President Muhammadu Buhari of arresting critics who criticized his alleged inability to deal with armed bandits who have been unleashing terror on innocent and helpless people in their villages. READ ALSO: Insecurity in North: Concerned Nigerians group seeks release of Katsina protest leader According to Adeyanju the Federal government and the Police have been intolerant of dissents who have constitutional rights to express their feelings and hold government officials accountable when they fail in their constitutional responsibilities. Sharif was arrested on Tuesday, by the police over a protest on rising attacks and killings by armed bandits in Katsina State and entire North, which the protesters called on the Governor of Katsina State, Rt Hon Aminu Bello Masari and President Muhammadu Buhari to resign over their inability to safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians in the North. The statement reads in part: “We are greatly worried that the President is arresting critics of his sheer incompetence in the handling of security situations in the North instead of the bandits killing Nigerians. “The President should arrest the bandits and not patriotic citizens speaking up against the gross incompetence of the government. A government that negotiates and begs bandits cannot be arresting critics. “The President needs to show leadership and stop arresting those criticizing him. We are in a democracy and this system of government gives the citizens the right and freedom to hold elected public officials accountable. “If the President can’t tolerate dissents, then, he should be courageous enough to resign. Freedom of assembly is one of the most fundamental rights of the citizens in a democracy. Lagos, through its State Examinations Board, LSEB, postponed, indefinitely, 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, into its Junior Secondary Schools in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Onitiri, who spoke yesterday in Lagos, expressed sadness that the politicians had forgotten so soon the sacrifice and message of June 12, which the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola struggled and died for, adding that currently, there is no democratic government in Nigeria. Also, a human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, said immortalising Abiola was not enough, saying that the last 21 years in the nation’s return to democratic rule have been full of sorrow and tears. Falana, who spoke during a live radio programme in Ibadan, urged true patriots in the country to intensify the struggle for genuine democracy. He said: “One of the policies carried out by the Buhari administration is the recognition of June as a public holiday and replacement of Democracy Day which was originally May 29. Those who set May 29 as a Democracy Day did so out of spite. “For eight years, Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration refused to recognise the supreme sacrifice paid by Abiola in the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. It was very good on the part of this administration to have recognised that day. “But it is not enough to immortalise MKO. It is not enough to recognise June 12 as a Democracy Day. The last 21 years have been civil rule of disenchantment and frustration on the part of the majority of Nigerians.
